Timba Bass Lesson 3: 2-3 Tumbaos Example 3
This example uses another very common device used in timba basslines. To outline the clave, the tumbao simply uses all four quarter-notes on the two-side. This creates a different kind of rhythmic “hook” that anchors the line, giving room for the other side of the clave to have more space. In addition, notice how the first quarter-note plays the root of the first chord, while the fourth anticipates the next chord. Together, this creates both the rhythmic and melodic aspects of the “on-beat/off-beat” concept of clave alignment that we will discuss in further detail in the lessons to come.
